Taking a Stand: The Story of the BC MacPaps

Volume 33  Issue 4, 5 & 6 | Posted: June 14, 2019

Taking a Stand: The story of the BC MacPaps is a documentary film in production about the BC volunteers of the legendary International Brigades. Volunteers from 73 countries formed the International Brigades – they went to Spain to help the Spanish government resist a military coup led by Francisco Franco and supported by Hitler and Mussolini.
400 Volunteers came from cities and towns across British Columbia. Loggers, miners, sailors, professionals and unemployed; they saw the risk of fascism and tried to stop its spread – yet their story is virtually unknown.
At a time when fascism is on the rise, where those who resist are branded as troublemakers and many feel powerless to make change, this story is an example of the power of the collective voice. If we don’t stand up for what’s right – who will?
