Bless the fathers, bless the brothers
Bless the sons and uncles too;
Then stand beside their graves lamenting
Theres’s nothing more that you can do.

Rue this conflict; rue the madness
Rue the day they went to war,
Some resigned, but still with valour;
It doesn’t matter any more.

Lost the loving, lost the laughter,
Lost the chance of their embrace;
Of going on through life together,
Of touching each belovéd face.

Bring the flowers, bring the children
Say they did not die in vain;
Say that war’s a noble happening,
Say that peace will come again.

State these clichés, state them boldly
Then carry on as best you can:
Bereaved, alone, to bear the price of
Man’s inhumanity to man.

2023 and continuing
