Once again the news is tragic:
Hostilities have far from ceased,
Bombs and missiles keep on burning
That powder keg, the Middle East.
Some had hoped the strife would finish
Quickly, and each side would say:
Let’s sit down and talk together,
Escalation’s not the way.
That hasn’t happened: smoke surrounds them
As yet another missile’s sent;
People cower or run for cover
Uncertain where that missile went.
Palestine is filled with rubble,
Shattered buildings all around
Grim debris at every corner;
Dead and wounded on the ground.
A mother stands, her face contorted;
Wild-eyed in her disbelief:
All four children have been murdered,
Who can comprehend such grief?
But even if peace came tomorrow,
If leaders said: agreement reigns,
That mother’s grief will last forever,
A lifelong victim she remains.
And if some time a truce is mooted,
Bombardments cease, each side will say:
We’ve made our point, we weren’t defeated;
We’ve lived to fight another day.
