The Pope’s Five Tips for Lent

Volume 35  Issue 1, 2 & 3 | Posted: April 4, 2021

For Pope Francis, Lent is a time to deepen our spiritual lives. Here are five tips from his homilies to reflect on this year.

  1. “Lent is the right time to make room for the Word of God. It is the time to turn off the television and open the Bible. It is the time to disconnect from your cellphone and connect to the Gospel.”
  2. “Our earthly possession will prove useless, dust that scatters, but the love we share — in our families, at work, in the church and in the world — will save us, for it will endure forever.”
  3. “If, at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew.”
  4. “A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value…Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love.”
  5. “We chase a thousand things that seem necessary and in reality are not. How good it would be for us to get rid of so many superfluous realities, to rediscover what matters, to find the faces of those around us!”
