Sweetgum Tree

It’s impossible not to think
of stained glass
a rose window
at the end of the street
a kaleidoscope of energy
goldleaf mirroring
the seasonal turn
fanned out across the sky
my earth-bound thoughts
pace back and forth

the past forgotten
the future restless
temperatures rising
glaciers retreating
salmon runs
nutrient poor
and in the not-yet
and in the no-longer
the sweetgum tree
sunlight pouring
catches autumn’s fire
burns hot and fast.
