The Editor:

Congratulations to Maria Ressa, Dmitry Muratov and brave journalists everywhere. Kudos to the Nobel committee for recently awarding this year’s peace prize to Ms. Ressa and Mr. Muratov for upholding freedom of expression. In repressive conditions, they dared to expose wrongdoing and advance democratic freedoms in the Philippines and Russia.

In my heart, I also extend the peace prize to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists for their painstaking work on the recently released Pandora Papers. They uncovered financial secrets of 35 current and former world leaders and more than 330 politicians and public officials in 91 countries and territories.

The papers also expose financial intrigues of many fugitives, con artists and murderers. The consortium’s website points to a “global stream of illicit money that enriches criminals and impoverishes nations.”
The work of these journalists highlights an urgent need to transform global financial, economic and social systems. I applaud the Nobel Peace Prize winners, the consortium and partners and many other journalists for their courage, skill and commitment to truth and justice.
