Joseph ‘Albert’ Wilfred Payette, OFM passes

PAYETTE, Joseph ‘Albert’ Wilfred OFM Brother Albert, a professed Franciscan Friar for 57 years, died on the Feast of St. Albert the Great, November 15, 2012, at James Bay Care Centre, in Victoria, B.C. He was 96 years old. Brother Albert was born on May 13, 1916, in Cornwall, Ontario, to Joseph and Delia (Samson) Payette. The last sibling in a large family, he was predeceased by eight brothers and three sisters. He served in the Canadian military in the Medical Corps from 1941 to 1946, entering the Franciscan community on March 25, 1953, in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Brother Albert requested to “live in the west”. He served a great number of Franciscan communities in various capacities in Winnipeg, Regina, Lumsden (SK), Cochrane (AB), Vancouver and Victoria. This friar is well remembered for his superb gardening skills, especially when he cared for the garden at Mount St.

Prayers were held at St. Joseph’s Friary Chapel, 1076 Joan Crescent, in Victoria, BC, on Sunday November 18th. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Friary Chapel, on Monday, November 19th. Inurnment of cremated remains will take place at the Franciscan Cemetery at Mt St. Francis Retreat Centre at Cochrane Alberta at a later date. May our brother rest in peace.
