Island Catholic News selected two new working board members at its annual general meeting on May 16. Lori Dueck and George Klima were appointed as board members of the Island Catholic News Society, joining Patrick Jamieson and Paul Lemay of Vancouver. The other three board members reside in Victoria where the newspaper is published.
Topics for discussion included the board-editor relationship. The managing editor position is an unpaid volunteer one, and the editor is also a board member. The questions of liability, accountability and the advisory nature of the board were discussed. Working board members are involved with all three major activities of the newspaper, its production, administration and distribution, including writing and suggesting articles.
Another major subject area of discussion was the newspapers relationship with its readership. Readers fall into a number of categories, including donors, subscribers, online readers and family and friend supporters. Donors account for 90 percent of the papers approximately $30,000 budget. The newspaper supports itself with three solicitation letters, aka begging letters, including one that accompanies tax receipts. ICN is a federal charity under Canada Revenue Agency, and a provincial non profit society.
Discussion also included the editorial content which tends to include both digested material from other sources and articles written by local writers and columnists, from across Canada. Distribution numbers approximately 500 copies, including bulk orders to a few parishes and individuals who undertake to do some distribution in their area.
Categories of articles include hard news, features, editorials, letters and opinions as well as regular columnists plus arts reports, poetry and obituaries and news notes. Readers are encouraged to give their input in any of these categories.
The question of succession and different fundraising ideas were deemed as ongoing ideas for discussion by the board.
Island Catholic News was founded in 1986 and has evolved along the way. Different stages included a monthly independent diocesan journal, distributed to every parish in Victoria Diocese during the tenure of Bishop Remi De Roo who retired in 1999.
Following Bishop De Roo’s retirement a period of controversy resulted, after which ICN took a more prophetic stance, defending his reputation which was ultimately vindicated by court records as reported by The Globe and Mail and in ICN. Three books on the history of this case and the 150 year history of the Diocese of Victoria have been published by ICN. Two during the tenure of editor Marnie Butler 1993-2005, written with her assistance by current editor Patrick Jamieson. The third book The Vindication of Remi De Roo was published in 2011 by Jamieson. The books are available from ICN for a small donation. In addition, videos of the life of Bishop De Roo and related subjects were produced by Raymond Painchaud and are also available.
