The Editor:

After the Pope’s visit to Canada, I am left with something I find troubling.

The term ‘genocide’ seemed to bubble up in the Pope’s consciousness only after the trip to Canada was ending, as he was on the flight back to Italy. To me, this is a glaring indication of how ill prepared he was for the trip. Why had his advisors not used the word in giving him details on the history of the situation he had agreed to address?

Does this indicate gaps in his advisor’s knowledge and understanding of the history of the church’s involvement with Indigenous folk?
