We freeze with shock, then hear the sirens
And suddenly police appear
They see the bloodshed, view the carnage
While people scream and run in fear.
Where’s the gunman; are there snipers?
Is this a gang…one man alone?
Cordons spread and lights are flashing
The school becomes a danger zone.
Small bouquets arrive in hundreds
Propped up in a sad display
Friends and families cry together;
Another killer had his way.
VIPs fly in proclaiming:
‘This must not happen any more!’
Their set piece is ‘Our thoughts and prayers…’
But we’ve heard all those words before.
Dreams are broken, lives are shattered;
The right to bear arms wins the day.
‘In God we trust’, but one thing’s stronger:
The power of the NRA.
