Advent, that time of waiting for the Prince if Peace to come is here. It is a time of reflection, hopefully bringing to mind those less fortunate than ourselves.
There are many disabilities some visible, and some invisible. Mental illness is an invisable disability. It afflicts rich and poor, young and old, those who are gifted and those who are not so gifted. The illness can be full blown schizophrenia, post traumatic stress syndrome, depression, and other various manifestations. Mental illness can vary from severe to mild. Today a lot of the symptoms of mental health can be controlled successfully by medication.
We have made great strides in our attitude towards mental health, and we will hopefully continue to move forward in our understanding of the condition. The stigma of guilt and shame are unfortunately still very present in our society toward those who are ill.

Advent is here so in our thoughts and reflections in this time of waiting we can think of those who struggle with mental health issues, and pray for them and their families.
