Teilhard was a theist and to imply he subscribed to a view that the “Sacred” is within and throughout the Universe, (and) not some Being directing the universe from outside ….is misleading and perhaps a misrepresentation of Teilhard’s essential orthodoxy. I think he suffered under Church authorities but because of both misunderstanding and misrepresentation.
He writes in Hymn of the Universe “…. the term towards which the earth is moving lies not merely beyond each individual but beyond the totality of things, because the world travails not to bring forth from within itself some supreme reality but to find its consummation through a union with a pre-existent Being”.
