New Branch of Chabad of Vancouver Island Opens in Nanaimo

By Rabbi Meir and Chani Kaplan, Chabad of Vancouver Island

Volume 30  Issue 4, 5 & 6 | Posted: July 7, 2016

We are very pleased to announce that a new branch of Chabad of Vancouver Island opened in Nanaimo, BC today. The new branch will serve the central island Jewish community.
Rabbi Bentzi Shemtov, his wife Blumie Shemtov and their children Mendel and Levi, landed on the island this afternoon. They look forward to moving into their new home and to serving the community. The Shemtovs are hoping, with God’s help, to open the first synagogue and Jewish Centre ever, north of Victoria on Vancouver Island.
On a personal note, we are extremely excited by their arrival. Blumie is Chani’s sister and after 12 years of us needing to travel thousands of miles to see any of our family members, the fact that we now have a sister, brother-in-law and nephews almost around the corner – brings great joy to our family.

We are thankful to members of the central island community for their support in establishing CHABAD OF NANAIMO AND CENTRAL VANCOUVER ISLAND. You are joined by a wonderful, dedicated family who will, G-d willing, be able to bring more Yiddishkeit to your cities and towns. We have no doubt that you will enjoy them and benefit from their contribution to your community for many years to come.
