Volume 29  Issue 4, 5 & 6 | Posted: June 30, 2015

HARTMANN, Rev. Gerhard (Gary)
February 26, 1929 –  April 30, 2015
Father Gary passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 86. Recruited as a Hitler Youth near the end of the Second World War, Gary defended Hitler’s suicide bunker. Captured by the Russians, he lingered in a Soviet prison camp until the late 1940's. A carpenter by trade, he converted to Catholicism in the 1960's under the tutelage of Mons. Philip Hanley when they became acquainted at Saanich Peninsula. Ordained by Bishop De Roo in 1976, Father Gary served in many parishes throughout Vancouver Island. He wrote his life story but it remains unpublished.
